"I think this is great! It has old-worldy colours and textures but modern abstraction and a grunge quality over previously favoured, pristine perfection in the subject matter. I can see this making a fine template for a pillow cover or tin or…"

Colourful Beginnings

"Great shot, I love the colours and the sense of fun and play. I think it works really well for what it is. The black background makes the colours stand out, but it is quite solid and dense. I am glad I was not there for cleanup."

Dandelion fibers

"I like the contrasting colours of blue and yellow. I would even increase the blue further to enhance the effect. I think your band of focus should have touched the centre star as you now have two focal points (the focus and the Hot-spot) and they…"

Jumping spider

"Very eye catching. I also think the spider could be lifted a little, but he really is rather drab compared to the flower. "

Esther's Journey

"I find this image rather flat and lacking in 3d depth. The pathway does not lead anywhere, so not much is evoked and there is a level of mystery missing as a result. The human figure looks stuck on, because the dof, angle of movement blur, tones and…"

If you go away...

"The shot works, well done. I think you should make the texture a little more translucent towards the centre so it acts a little more like a vignette. Being a blanket over the entire image gives it quite a lot of visual weight which is stealing some…"

Its just the kind of day to leave myself behind

"A beautiful picture. The soft dreamy edit is quite heavy handed, to the point of over emphasis. I am not saying the image does not work, but it is not subtle. I like the light, colours and textures which keep the eye busy and entertained. The one…"

Will you catch me when I fall?

"I like this image, but to me it tells the story of a person overcoming fear. The action looks like "getting up" rather than "cowering down". You have also chosen to lower the contrast, crushed shadows would communicate mystery…"

Lesotho Fire

Posted on January 21, 2015 at 11:26 3 Comments

We were in Lesotho over the Christmas holidays. Everyone who hears that says "but why Lesotho?" and now you know. The sunset surprised us one evening after a storm. It was my one year old son who alerted me to it. So having noted the time and position I set up in preparation the next day. So luckily this is what sunsets look like in that area often enough for me to set…

Macro Photography Weekend at Old Joe's Kaia

Posted on September 27, 2013 at 10:50 11 Comments

Recently we had our very first macro weekend at Old Joe’s Kaia in Schoemanskloof, and it was amazing. I absolutely loved the experience and the location and the people. Old Joe’s Kaia is set in a beautiful part of the country and provides an abundance of subject matter for just about any type of photography. We were probably a little early in the year to get the best array of insects for that sort of macro, but the size of the property and diversity of areas within the grounds allowed us…
